How are you protected when you are called to active duty?
Federal employees who are called to active duty during a national emergency are entitled to differential pay—also known as “top-up” pay.
Your active service does not have to be related to the national emergency. If your active service is at the same time as a national emergency, you may qualify for differential pay.

So, what is Differential Pay?
Differential pay covers the difference between what you earn in your civilian job and your military job. Differential pay makes sure you get paid what you earn in your civilian job while you are called up to active duty during a national emergency.
For instance, if you are paid $4,000 a month during active duty, but you would have earned $7,000 in your regular civilian job, your employer is responsible for paying you the $3,000 difference.
